by the Peace Treaty. Most old good families here have become poor
and those who are poor of old have not become rich,but they enjoy
what socialism gives them, namely short hours of work and much lei-
sure spent in a useless way.
I am sure you sometimes read of German and Austrian
depravation chiefly produced by so-called democracy and by imitating
more progressive nations, at least in making politics a special
business and confounding political aims with the natural tendencies
of every individual, living in a capitalistic society, to get as much
money as possible out of everything. On the whole, the world is sad,
at least in its European part, for most people and nowhere sadder
than in this country and in old Vienna, which has been spoiled by
fate and is now very roughly handled by what Napoleon called the
fate, namely politics .
